State Tournament: Several local teams take their chances at a championship this week

    CORVALLIS, Ore. - The High School State Basketball Tournament is finally here, and a handful of teams from Eugene and Springfield will be traveling north to try their hand at winning the state championship this year.

    The tournament kicks off on Wednesday, where three local teams will get underway. In the 5A Boys Basketball tournament, No. 1 Churchill will kick things off against No. 9 La Salle Prep at 1:30 p.m. at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis. Immediately following that game, No. 4 Willamette and No. 5 Thurston will tip at 3:15 p.m.

    The winner of those two games will meet in the semifinals, to be played on Friday afternoon, followed by the championship on Saturday afternoon.

    On Thursday, both the 5A and 6A Girls Basketball tournaments will start, and No. 3 Springfield will take on No. 6 Churchill at 6:30 p.m. at Gill Coliseum. Later, at 8:15 p.m. at the Chiles Center in Portland, No. 7 Sheldon will tip off against No. 2 Tigard.

    NBC 16 and KVAL will be on scene for coverage of the two games on Wednesday afternoon, as well as throughout the weekend for the championship games, should any teams make it. To stay updated, follow along on twitter using #LiveOnKMTR and #LiveOnKVAL for up to the minute scores.
