Oregon holds on for 3-2 victory over Cal
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Day one of the Pac-12 Baseball Tournament came to an end with Oregon beating Cal 3-2 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Golden Bears are essentially playing for their season at this point in the year. Cal needs every win they can get to secure a spot in the NCAA Regional and they played like it Tuesday night.
The Golden Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Ducks scoring back-to-back runs in the first and second inning.
Oregon responded in the bottom of the second inning with a Bennett Thompson sac-fly to score Tanner Smith from third base to cut the lead to one.
The Ducks rallied late in the eighth inning to tack on two more runs including a Jacob Walsh sac-fly to once again score Tanner Smith to take the lead late.
After giving up a single to the first batter to open the ninth, Oregon buckled down on defense again forcing a fly out and double play to end the game victorious.
The Ducks tallied 11 hits, including three by Tanner Smith and two by Drew Smith while holding Cal to six hits.
Oregon will now get one day off before returning to the diamond Thursday night to face Stanford at 7:00 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
