SILVERTON, Ore. – Wildlife officials are looking into reports of a cougar sighting at The Oregon Garden in Silverton on Wednesday evening.

A visitor at the garden took a photo of the cougar while she was on a walk. She sent the photo and information to managers at The Oregon Garden, who in turn notified the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW).

An ODFW spokesperson said they are working with the USDA Wildlife Services in trying to capture the cougar, as it’s considered a public safety issue.

Allie Woodson, Regional Marketing Manager for The Oregon Garden, said the 80-acre botanical garden has closed its gates as a safety precaution.

She adds that an adult cougar was also recently seen in a nearby neighborhood.

KATU News has reached out to ODFW. A spokesperson said they are currently investigating the sighting.
