CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- An unknown disease is spreading among dogs in Virginia that is similar to whooping cough.

Autumn Trails Veterinary Center told WCAV that it has seen 22 dogs since Thursday, August 2.

Other local vet practices said they have seen more than 40 dogs with the disease over the past month.

The manager at Autumn Trails said the dogs that have come in are well-vaccinated.

So, right now, she's recommending you not socialize your dog with the disease spreading.

"With a lot of boarding facilities and people traveling, I think it's coming from dog parks, groomers, boarding, kennels," she told WCAV. "Those are the main areas that it's coming from."

If your dog has the cough, go to the vet as the disease can last up to three weeks.

Veterinarians are currently running tests to find out what the disease is and how it can be prevented.
