'These types of lawsuits are meritless': Lawsuit against Sutherlin School District dropped
SUTHERLIN, Ore. -- A lawsuit against the Sutherlin School District involving a transgender student has been dropped.
The lawsuit, filed in May, was dropped this week.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Oregon, a parent sued the district because her child felt uncomfortable using the bathroom at the same time as a transgender student.
"Courts are sending a very clear message that these types of lawsuits are meritless," said Kelly Simon, Staff attorney with the ACLU of Oregon, "and the thing that these suits are asking for violate these students' rights."
Oregon law protects students from discrimination on the basis of gender identity.
We reached out to the Sutherlin School District for comment.
Their superintendent told us this isn't just an issue for trans students because all students deserve a safe learning environment.
