COOS BAY, Ore. -- High school students in Coos Bay joined students across the nation in a national school walkout Wednesday morning.

Dozens of Marshfield High School students walked out of class to protest gun violence.

Wednesday marked one month since the Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

"Enough is enough, enough is enough,” the chant rang out from students who had a message for lawmakers. “We want change, we want change.”

"They're trying to put off the conversation about gun control and about school safety as long as they can, and I think it's time for students to get involved and say enough is enough, and we need to stop this, and never again," said Marshfield junior Cameron Langley.

The protest lasted 17 - one minute for each of the victims killed at the Florida high school last month.

"I, for one, have seen people go through losing their family due to a school shooting, and I feel like if this generation helps, this could be the start of something beautiful," said MHS senior Elizabeth Knapp.

School officials were on hand and worked with students to support their right to demonstrate in a peaceful manner.

"It's a learning opportunity for kids to assemble and show support,” Marshfield Principal Travis Howard said. “This walkout, I think for us as an administration, is all about school safety."

"I hope that if this gets noticed that some of our representatives take notice and represent," said Langley.

"For some students out here, they came out here to follow the fad,” explained Knapp, “but for some students, like myself and the other man that was here, it's about actually wanting to see something done in the world."

Students from Southwestern Oregon Community College and North Bend High School also took part in the walkout Wednesday morning.
