WINCHESTER, Ore. – Demonstrations, hands-on activities, tours and brain games await curious minds of all ages at the STEAM Extravaganza, set from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 6 at Umpqua Community College.

The free celebration presents a roster of family-friendly activities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, with artful innovation tying it all together.

Tours of the UCC Observatory are planned, weather permitting, allowing kids and adults to use equipment to view the sun, as well as an opportunity to get a free pair of eclipse-viewing glasses.

Members of the UCC Art Department will give tours and demonstrate their tools and technology. Visitors can also get a closer look at the new Bonnie J. Ford Health, Nursing & Science Center, and take part in activities hosted by the UCC Geology Club.

The YMCA of Douglas County will furnish activities, and representatives of Wildlife Safari will bring animal visitors and information about their habitats.

In addition to a Mini-Maker/Tinker Space, there will be chances to learn about and use microscopes, electrical bikes, math fun and more.

The STEAM Extravaganza is organized by the Umpqua Valley STEAM Hub, which seeks to build on an existing STEAM foundation that can revitalize the community, educationally as well as economically. UCC is partnering with the Hub by sharing information on numerous UCC STEAM-related courses that lead directly to dynamic jobs.
