DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - Get ready to slow down on I-5 near Roberts Mountain in Douglas County. The speed limit is changing.
The speed limit there is now 55 miles per hour for cars and trucks. This is part of a three-year project by the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Crews are building climbing lanes for trucks and then paving the freeway.
"What this allows is having a truck-climbing lane,” said ODOT's Dan Latham,. “[The climbing lane] allows those trucks to get in the slow lane and other vehicles who can travel highway speeds can stay in the left two lanes."
The speed reduction will be in place for at least a year.
Latham says drivers should watch out for congestion.
The project is set to be completed around 2021.
