TENMILE, Ore. - Detectives are looking into a claim that a man who shot his neighbor in the leg Tuesday did so in self-defense, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Friday.

Deputies responded to the 500 block of Degnath Gateway Lane in Tenmile just after 6:30 a.m. that day to a report of a shooting.

The investigation found that Kevin Eugene Welker, 57, had been shot in the leg by his neighbor Kevin Duckworth, 56, the sheriff's office said. The two had been "involved in an ongoing neighborhood dispute," the sheriff's office said.

Medics took Welker to the hospital in critical condition.

On Friday, the sheriff's office provided an update on the case.

"The Detective’s Division is looking into a claim that the shooting was done in self-defense," "The investigation is on-going and no further details will be released at this time."
