Officers took a man into custody Wednesday near an apartment complex off of Cornell Road after taking reports he was armed with a machete.

Police surrounded the man near some trees at The Lakes apartment complex off of Cornell at the Evergreen Parkway intersection. After two hours of talking with the man, they managed to get him to surrender peacefully.

Officers were first called out about noon on reports that a man was walking around the area with a blade near 185th Avenue and Cornell Road.

Witnesses told KATU News that law enforcement used a stun gun on the man, but it had no effect.

One witness recorded cellphone video of police shooting the man with a stun gun. Watch it below:

In the video you can hear officers yelling at the man, "Drop it!! Drop it!!! Drop it now!!!!!"

"This is probably the craziest thing I've ever seen," said Zachary Peterson, who works near the place where police eventually surrounded the man.

Peterson says officers used the stun gun on the man two or three times.

"I saw a hammer in one hand and a machete in the other and the cops were swarming up on him," said Peterson.

He then crossed Cornell Road and police surrounded him near an apartment complex.

"They followed him, again not to escalate the situation," said Hillsboro Police Lt. Harry Reimann. "Again, the officers are concerned because he's being somewhat incoherent. Not responding. We have given him some water. He started talking with the officers and then he stopped again."

By about 2:15 p.m., law enforcement managed to take the man into custody.

Hillsboro police say the man was taken to St. Vincent Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
