WINSTON, Ore. -- Police say a man in Winston tried to lure a 16-year-old girl as she was walking home.

They are issuing some helpful tips in case this happens to your child.

The man told the girl her mother was in the hospital and that she needed to go with him right away.

The girl knew the man was lying and ran home.

Roseburg Police say to tell your child to do whatever is necessary to get away.

"Be loud, if they need to,” Sgt. Gary Klopfenstein says, “if it's getting physical, scream, bite, ‘you're not my dad,’ ‘you're not my mom,’ those kind of things; anything to draw attention and get away."

Police suggest you play out scenarios with your children so they will be better prepared if something like this happens to them.
