Man dies following domestic dispute in Springfield (SBG)

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A domestic dispute turned violent on 55th and Holly Street on Monday night, where a man sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound after threatening his wife and two teenage children with a gun.

A disturbance call came in to police just after 7 p.m., followed by several calls reporting gunshots at the residence.

Officers arrived quickly and evacuated a woman and her two children, ages 13 and 17, who had barricaded themselves inside the garage.

After law enforcement was able to remove the three victims from the incident safely, a SWAT team attempted to contact the male through telephone and loud hailing, but received no response.

Police say that around 9 p.m., SWAT entered the residence and found the male suspect dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Springfield Police on Tuesday identified the deceased as 48-year-old Timothy Michael Kurtz.

Preliminary investigations reveal that alcohol was involved in the domestic dispute, and the mother and her two children were unharmed in the situation.

"The reason why we had security so far out in this situation is that there was information that the suspect was armed with a handgun and a long gun, so has a capability to cause injury from a long distance away," said Lt. Scott McKee.
