Lane County Waste Management changes recycling rules

Plastic Recycling

LANE COUNTY, Ore. - Under new rules, if you recycle at Lane County Waste Management, you might need to find a new way to throw away your plastics.

The county is no longer recycling plastics, except for clear milk jugs. This is all because China, who usually imports our plastics, is no longer accepting the material

Now the county is backed up because they cannot export plastic to another county, which is why they decided to stop recycling plastics.

"It's a big deal, we've been collecting plastics here for many years," said Dan Hurley, of Lane County Waste Management. "It's good to see those materials turned into new plastic product, but we just cannot market those right now."

The change does not affect residential curb-side recycling, and Hurley says you can still recycle plastic bottles a the Oregon bottle drop, as well as plastic bags at major grocery chains.
