Police: Suspect arrested in officer-involved shooting in Medford

Law enforcement is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting in the 1000 block of Garfield St. in Medford.

At 1:13 p.m. Medford Police responded to a report of 41-year-old William Allen Shelton Jr. menacing a person at the home. The person also advised police that there were three children inside the home.

Multiple units responded to the home and attempted to make contact with Shelton who was not uncooperative and hostile to police.

At 2:09 p.m. Officers say Shelton fired the first shot, exited the residence armed with a rifle and then shot additional shots.

An MPD officer shot Shelton in the upper chest area that's when he was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Sheldon is currently being held overnight with non-threatening injuries.

The officers on scene and children were not harmed.

The Jackson County District Attorney's Office was notified and responded to the scene.

The case will be investigated by the Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit and Oregon State Police will take lead in the investigation.

The officer involved will be placed on an administrative leave while the case is reviewed by the District Attorney's Office followed by an administrative review.
