The employer of a 52-year-old Central Point woman who was severely mauled by a pit bull Tuesday is raising money to cover the woman’s medical expenses.
In a Wednesday Facebook post, Morrtons restaurant in Medford said it would hold a fundraiser for Diana Sanders.
“Diana is one of the most caring people we know, always giving to others and helping those in need, even when she didn’t have much herself,” the post said.
Anyone wishing to help Sanders can make a donation at the restaurant, or to donation account No. 1625572, set up at Rogue Credit Union. A GoFundMe fundraiser has also been started.
Employees at the eatery declined comment when reached by telephone, but the post said Sanders had been caring for the dog of a friend when she was attacked.
According to police, multiple officers flocked to a home in the 900 block of Brandi Way at 4:32 p.m. after an 11-year-old girl called 911. (Corrected online)
The first officer on the scene found Sanders and a pit bull inside, according to Central Point police Lt. Scott Logue. The animal had Sanders by the arm and would not let go, police said. The officer shot the dog multiple times, killing it, Logue said.
Officers rendered aid to Sanders until an ambulance arrived to take her to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. She was listed Wednesday in “fair” condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Lauren Van Sickle.
The Morrtons Facebook post said Sanders had lost her left arm, but that report could not immediately be confirmed.
“The quick response of the young caller phoning emergency services and the immediate intervention by the first responding officer quite possible saved the life of the victim,” said a Central Point police news release.
The 11-year-old’s relationship to Sanders was not immediately known.
On Wednesday afternoon, an outpouring of support could seen from comments on the Morrtons Facebook post, which had been shared more than 100 times.
“Diana Sanders is the sweetest, most giving and hardest-working friend we have,” one comment said.
“This breaks my heart,” said another. “She is such an amazing person.”
