Elementary School students in Springfield decorate rain barrels for Earth Day
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Earth day is this weekend and Springfield students are celebrating in a new way.
The City of Springfield is holding this year’s Rain Barrel Art Contest to teach students about water conservation.
Nearly 325 fourth grade students across the Springfield School District teamed up to decorate rain barrels over the last few weeks. The barrels will be used in Springfield schools for water harvesting.
“The students worked in small groups of about seven students, each working with their own barrel," said Laura Keir with the City of Springfield. "The theme this year was ‘Every Drop Counts,’ so we had students brainstorm together ideas for their design that would relate to that theme, and then they just started painting."
The City of Springfield chose the winners of the contest, which will be announced by the Mayor of Springfield Christine Lundberg on Monday night at the Springfield City Hall Council Chambers.
