Driver dies in Albany after crashing car without seatbelt

A fatal crash took place on Old Salem Road in Albany on Tuesday morning. 

ALBANY, Ore. - The Linn County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal crash that took place on Old Salem Road on Tuesday morning.

The crash was caused when a 1978 Chevrolet El Camino, operated by Grant Hromas, 50, left the southbound lane of travel and crossed completely over to the northbound lane of travel.

Hromas collided head on with a 2013 Hyundia Elantra, operated by Gayle Hess, 83. Hess sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Samaritan Albany General Hospital.

It is unknown what caused Hromas to leave his lane of travel, but there are no indications of drug or alcohol use at this time. Hromas was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.

This is the second fatal motor vehicle crash in two days where the operator was not wearing a seatbelt. Undersheriff Yon would like to remind passengers to wear their seatbelts while operating or riding in a vehicle.
