ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The Douglas County Board of Commissioners welcomed a new member Wednesday morning.

Gary Leif took his oath of office for Position 1 on the commission.

Leif was elected with more than 50 percent of the vote in the May primary.

He replaces longtime commissioner Susan Morgan.

"I told my wife when we first got together, I said, ‘I want to be county commissioner someday,’” Leif recalled. “So I worked very hard to achieve that dream and I am living my dream."

Leif is the owner of a photography studio in downtown Roseburg.

He says he wants to leave a lasting impression on the community as a respectful listener.

"The best would be, ‘he was the most respectful and understanding, and listened and really tried to resolve issues.’ I think that's probably the legacy I'd like to leave," said Leif.

Leif has moved into his new office in the Douglas County Courthouse.

His first day on the job as commissioner will be Tuesday, January 3.
