The body of a 51-year-old Canadian man who fell into the Pacific Ocean while hiking along a bluff near Devil’s Cauldron last week was found Tuesday, Oregon State Police said.

Joseph Lescene and Sarah Lescene – both from British Columbia – were hiking on the bluff in Oswald West State Park on Monday, Sept. 11 when Joseph lost his footing and fell about 800 feet into the water below.

Search and rescue crews found Joseph’s backpack in the water below the cliff that day.

On Tuesday, just after 7 a.m., OSP received a report that a man’s body had washed ashore on Short Sands Beach, which is in Oswald West State Park.

Authorities recovered the body and positively identified it as Joseph Lescene.
