National foundation chapter tags two South Umpqua football players for scholarships
Two Lancers will be among the 16 student athletes recognized by the National Football Foundation Oregon Chapter at its Feb. 25 banquet to honor scholarship recipients.
Taylor Gross and Johnathan Warner, both backs for the South Umpqua High School football team, will be spotlighted with 14 other honorees at the Red Lion Hotel in Portland’s Jantzen Beach. It’s the foundation’s 57th annual scholar-athlete banquet. South Umpqua High School is the only school this year to send two finalists.
Twelve of the 16 athletes will receive a scholarship in the amount of $750. The top four athletes – one back and one lineman from 6A/5A divisions and one back and one lineman from 4A/3A/2A/1A divisions – will receive a $1,500 scholarship by scoring the highest points in their respective divisions.
George Crace, executive director for the NFF Oregon chapter, said the group has been showcasing young athletes in this way since 1960.
“Every year, parents leave the banquet with a great impression of what it means to combine athletics with scholarship and leadership, and then honor the young men who are excellent in all three areas,” Crace said.
SUSD Superintendent Tim Porter said he was delighted that two Lancers will represent the school district at this year’s banquet.
“This honor is a testament to the hard work that goes into South Umpqua School District athletic programs,” Porter said. “We applaud the dedication of our students, our staff, their family members and the community members who support our efforts to achieve excellence throughout the school district.”
