One year later, Beavers remember Fred Thompson

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- While he may be gone, the Beavers say Fred Thompson will never be forgotten.

This Friday marks the one year anniversary of Thompson's tragic death, which struck the Oregon State football team with tragedy.

To honor Thompson, several of his closest friends and teammates gathered outside of Reser Stadium on Friday for a balloon release.

"It's all about Fred right now. It's always been about Fred," says Scott Crichton. "We dedicated the whole season to Fred.

"It's hard. It's hard for us to be out here, but we appreciate him."

Thompson was only 19 years old when he died of a heart attack while playing pick up basketball at the Oregon State rec center.

"He was a good man," says Presley Colville, who organized the event. "He was gone too early."

Colville described Thompson as a "goof," as he was known to always have a smile on his face.

"He wouldn't want us to be upset, he wouldn't want us to be down," says Rusty Fernando. "Maybe in a sense, letting go of these balloons lifted him up, and let him know we haven't forgot."
