After resignation, city looking for new council member

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Roseburg city councilor Ken Averett has stepped down from his position, and now the city is looking for his replacement.

Averett has held a position in Ward 1 for about four and a half years, but he says that life has gotten a little too busy to continue on the council.

A promotion at his job and a new position in his church are taking up a lot of his spare time, and that's time he says he's missing out on family activities. "I have four boys in my family, and I have a nephew that's staying with us right now," he said. "Going to games or whatever with the kids, you know, I want to make them my priority."

Averett's term was set to run through 2016.

Now, the City of Roseburg will start taking applications for his position.

The person chosen to fill the spot would need to be certified for placement on the November 2014 ballot in order to fulfill the full unexpired term.

In a release sent out Tuesday, the city says the person must be a registered voter, have lived in Roseburg for one year and reside in Ward 1.

People interested in applying can get more information and an application from the City of Roseburg's Web site.
