CHEMULT, Ore. - A wildfire closed Highway 97 south of Chemult on Wednesday while firefighters attacked the flames from the air and ground.
The fire burned about 10 acres of private forest land along Hwy 97, about 16 miles south of Chemult, Oregon State Police said.
Reported around 1:30 p.m., the highway was completely closed for 2 hours while two airplanes dropped retardant, a helicopter dumped buckets of water and ground crews worked to contain the blaze.
One lane was open by about 6 p.m. as crews shifted to mopping up the fire.
All lanes were open by 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
The Forest Service said the cause of the fire, dubbed the Military Fire, is under investigation.
