'Know before you go': Coast Guard stresses safety after 7 bar-related deaths last year

COOS BAY, Ore. -- With the weather warming up the Coast Guard wants to make sure you're safe out on the water.

They say: “Know before you go,” meaning check weather conditions, tides and carry proper equipment.

According to Coast Guard Sector North Bend, seven people died on the Oregon coast in bar-related accidents last year.

Most were out-of-towners who did not know the rules about crossing restricted bars, officials said.

"If you're launching your boat, see the flashing lights and it says tune in to channel 1610 or listen to channel 16 for current broadcast, that means we do have a restriction on the bar,” said Ryan Clendenen with Coast Guard Station Coos Bay. “There's lights, there's radio broadcasts, everything we can do to get the word out, plus we have the tower watch stand up there from dust until dawn watching for boats."
