Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free vessel safety checks this Saturday
CHARLESTON, Ore. -- National Safe Boating Week kicks off this weekend and the Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a free vessel safety check for the occasion.
Examiners will make sure boats meet state and Coast Guard boating laws for equipment.
They will also issue a 2017 decal that certifies compliance.
The Coast Guard says that goes a long way during law enforcement patrols.
"We see that sticker; we can obviously tell you've already taken the extra step that's not even required to ensure your safety on the water and it makes everybody's job easier to keep the boating public safe," says Andrew Knox with Coast Guard Station Coos Bay.
The free vessel safety check is Saturday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Englund Marine parking lot in Charleston.
