MANZANITA, Ore. - A Canadian man is missing after falling off an 800-foot cliff near Devil's Cauldron on the Oregon Coast on Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The wife of the 51-year-old from British Columbia, Canada, reported seeing him fall from the cliff at Oswald West State Park, the Coast Guard said.

According to Oregon State Police, Joseph Lescene and Sarah Lescene from British Columbia were hiking on a bluff when Joseph lost his footing and fell about 800 feet.

Sightseers in the area heard Sarah’s yells for help and called 911 just before 3:30 p.m.

Search crews working by sea and air managed to find one of the man's shoes and his backpack floating in the ocean.

The Coast Guard suspended the search at sunset Sunday.

“Suspending a search is one of the hardest decisions we ever have to make,” said Mark Dobney, command duty officer, Sector Columbia River. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this tragic and trying time.”
