YMCA offers diabetes prevention program
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Over 26 million people are currently suffering from diabetes, and even more are battling pre-diabetes.
YMCA lifestyle coaches recommend small changes like reducing body weight and improving your overall health.
The American Diabetes Association recommends an ultimate goal of 150 minutes of physical activity every week. Michelle Horn from the Roseburg YMCA says that it really isn't that hard. "15 minutes a day, you know, two or three times a day, if we can do that and just, making the right choices when we eat," she said. "And the real secret is eat less, exercise more."
The Roseburg YMCA has a diabetes prevention program. "It is usually an 8 week program, 2 times a week for 8 weeks," said Horn. "We have a certified nutritionist who teaches that program. So, we add in nutrition, plus just learning how to do a healthy lifestyle."
Horn has seen improvement in the health of those who've gone through the program.
The program is offered several times a year, and Horn says the next session is coming up this fall.
