CANYONVILLE, Ore. -- The South County YMCA set up shop at Stanton Park in Canyonville over the weekend for their annual Water Safety Day.
YMCA staffers gave out free life jackets and informational demonstrations.
The idea for Water Safety Day came to YMCA program coordinators about a year ago.
Gary Williams explains how they put their plan into action. "Another child had drowned in one of the rivers in Douglas County, and we were talking about it because we have our pools and we're the YMCA, we should do something. You know? To help try and prevent this, anyways. We were able to secure two grants."
Those grants allowed them to purchase hundreds of life jackets to pass out to Douglas County families.
Kids spun the wheel to win goggles and other swimming supplies.
YMCA workers also provided custom fittings of the life jackets to teach children how to wear them properly.
