Tacoma fighters were called to the 5000 block of 12th Street NE at around 5:30 p.m. after getting reports of black smoke wafting from a lot located at the end of a dead-end road, according to the Tacoma Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived moments later and found a large tire fire that had spread to nearby brush and other debris, including several unoccupied buildings and vehicles.
Crews immediately established a permanent water supply and began attacking the fire, according to fire officials. They battled the roughly five-acre fire for hours, but high winds and hot temperatures caused it to spread.
It took more than an hour for the firefighters to contain the fire on all flanks.
By 7:30 p.m., the fire was under control, but crews remained on scene to monitor hot spots.
Nobody was injured and there's no word on what caused the fire.
