COOS BAY, Ore. -- The Student Veterans Center at Southwestern Oregon Community College is officially open.

And for the students that will use the center, it's more than just a lounge area.

Organizers and students are welcoming visitors to the grand opening.

Inside are computers for studying, snacks to keep the energy level high, a lounge area to relax with friends, and dedicated people trying to build a better future.

"This room is now in full force, ready to help veterans succeed," said organizer Marvin Heskett, who’s also a veteran.

He thought of other veterans when pushing for this room, veterans like Richard Root, an Army vet who served in Iraq.

"Having this place to study and then having other veterans,” Root explained. “I have a good peer group to talk with."

Root says he's inspired by Heskett to pursue a Masters in social work, “To become a counselor to help other veterans."

Others from the community and the college were inspired and surprised Heskett with a plaque.

To Heskett, it’s not just a study room; he says the center is a good place to visit to relieve stress.

"People with PTSD can come in if they're feeling symptoms while on campus."

Heskett and others in the veterans group are working to make the resource center certified as a “PTSD safe room.”
