Student killed in SPU shooting from Portland
SEATTLE, Ore. - The 19-year-old man who was shot and killed Thursday at Seattle Pacific University by a gunman was Paul Lee, a student who was from Portland, city officials announced Friday.
Mayor Ed Murray said during an afternoon news conference that Lee's parents just arrived from Korea.
KATU News has confirmed Lee went to Westview High School. He graduated from there last year.
Brian Bangerter, a Japanese instructor at the school, released the following statement to KATU Friday afternoon:
"Paul Lee was a ray of light in my classroom for three years. It was impossible be around him and not feel happy. He made class fun for everyone. His laugh and smile were both contagious. Everyone who knew him felt close to him. He will always be remembered for his infectious positive attitude. I know I will never forget him."
According to Maureen Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Beaverton School District, Lee also attended Bethany Elementary School and Stoller Middle School.
Two other young people were wounded after the gunman, who police say is Aaron Ybarra, 26, entered the foyer at Otto Miller Hall on the school's campus and started shooting. When he paused to reload, a student building monitor disarmed him. The gunman had additional rounds and a knife, Seattle police said.
Ybarra was not a student at the school, police said.
Four people, including the young man who died, were taken to Harborview Medical Center. Sarah Williams, 19, remained in intensive care Friday in critical condition, according to the hospital. A 24-year-old man, Thomas Fowler, was in satisfactory condition.
A 22-year-old man injured in the struggled with the suspect was treated and released, officials said.
Ybarra was booked into the King County Jail late Thursday for investigation of homicide. He appeared in court Friday afternoon. A judge found probable cause to hold him without bail Friday.
In a statement filed in court, Seattle police wrote that Ybarra admitted to detectives after his arrest that he wanted to kill as many people as possible and then himself.
