Sheriff's deputy and wife hit by car during Mexico vacation

LOS CABOS, Mexico -- A Sheriff's Deputy and his spouse were seriously injured on Friday when they were hit by a car while vacationing in Mexico, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.

Officials said that Deputy Drew Wattier and his wife, Michelle were outside of their hotel in Los Cabos, Mexico at around 7 p.m. Friday when they were hit by a passing car.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office reported that both Drew and Michelle are in critical (but stable) condition at this time.

Carrie Carver with the Lane County Sheriff's Office told KVAL that because the Wattiers are being treated in Mexico it is hard to find out more information.

"We have really limited communication with the authorities ... and the hospital staff down there," Carver said. "So what we are doing now is just trying to get as much information as we can. We are different countries, so that is pretty difficult."

Carver said that both Deputy Wattier and his wife are considered to be a big part of the Lane County Sheriff's Office family. She added that everyone at LCSO hopes they will return home soon.

The Sheriff's Office said they will set up an assistance fund for the Wattier family at Selco Bank on Monday.
