Sheriff: Driver, 15, crashed as deputy attempted to catch up to speeding car
ROSEBURG, Ore. - A 15-year-old driver sped past patrol vehicles with their lights on early Sunday morning, then crashed as deputies attempted to catch up, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said.
The driver - identified as 15-year-old Freedom Love Rose or Roseburg - was initially taken to Mercy Medical Center before being transferred to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, the sheriff's office said.
Rose's 17-year-old passenger was treated at Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg.
The chase began early Sunday morning as deputies investigated a car chase that began in Roseburg and continued through Winston to Happy Valley Road.
While still on scene with their patrol car lights on, deputies saw a 1998 Chrysler Sebrig convertible speed by.
The Sebring crashed as a deputy attempted to catch up and pull over the car.
"The crash investigation is continuing," the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "Alcohol and marijuana appear to be contributing factors."
