Sheriff: Coquille man killed in logging accident

COQUILLE, Ore. -- A man was killed Wednesday near Coquille, when authorities say he was cutting down trees on his property.

At around 12:40 pm, the Coos County Sheriff's office received a 911 call reporting a logging accident in the hills near the end of Glen Aiken Road, southeast of Coquille.

Authorities say Richard Christopher Fortune, 60, of Coquille, was logging by himself on his property, falling some large cedar trees.

Officials say one of those trees was intertwined with a large maple tree, which was pulled out of the ground and spun, falling directly on the man.

Officials say Fortune died instantly.

The Coos County Sheriff's office, Coquille Fire and EMS, Coquille police and several citizens responded to the scene to help recover his body.

Officials say a family friend was able to operate Fortune's excavator, lifting the tree off of him.

The Coos County Medical Examiner's office is continuing to investigate the accident.
