Roseburg High begins search for new football coach
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Roseburg High School is actively looking for a new head varsity football coach, and candidates have big shoes to fill.
For 45 years, Roseburg head coach Thurman Bell led the team to many victories on Finlay Field before his recent retirement.
Bell finished with the second most wins in Oregon high school history.
The school district began advertising the open position Wednesday and has already had a number of calls from interested candidates.
Roseburg athletic director Russ Bolin played for coach Bell for three years and coached with him for sixteen.
"There will never be another Thurman Bell in the state of Oregon," Bolin says. "Someone who coaches at the same school for 45 years it's kind of unheard of nowadays."
He says the school is excited for this new chapter. Surveys are posted at the school's website so the community can weigh in on what they want to see in a new coach.
"What we're looking for is they got to be a great educator," Bolin adds. "They got to be able to connect with kids and connect with kids quickly and build those relationships."
They will take applications until the end of February and then the screening and interview process will begin.
