Roseburg earns Heritage award from state group
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Roseburg's effort to preserve the community has put it on the map.
The title is called 'Oregon Heritage All-Star Community,' and it's a statewide designation given by the Oregon Heritage Commission.
The honor recognizes a range of community efforts, like taking care of the tree on the Douglas County Courthouse lawn, which is over 100 years old.
Brian Davis, a Roseburg Community Developer, says the tree isn't just standing there all on it's own. "It's little support beams and ties to keep the branches alive and keep the tree going," Davis said. "It's considered a historic tree, and little efforts like that are recognized."
Davis says Roseburg also qualified for this designation because of the Umpqua Business Center, which used to be an old Farmer's Co-Op.
The All-Star program was started last fall.
