Race car lands in parking lot after crash

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A 58-year-old race car driver was seriously injured in a crash that sent him flying out of the Douglas County Speedway complex and into the parking lot.

Driver George Blacker crashed on the last lap of the vintage sprint car race.

Jeff Soldberg stopped racing because of a neck injury, but he was watching from the stands Saturday when the crash happened.

"It was on the inside coming up, when he hit the other guys tire he went over the top of that other guys car," he said.

Monte Cox, the president of the Pacific Racing Association, said the car involved in the crash weighs about 1,700 pounds and has 600-700 horsepower.

This is the second accident on this part of the track this year. Soldberg said officials are now investigating what caused Blacker to crash.

Blacker was transported to Mercy Medical Center and later flown to Sacred Heart at RiverBend in Springfield.

He suffered critical injuries in the crash but is expected to survive.
