Police: Freak hail storm causes I-5 crash

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- A crash on Interstate 5 at Robert's Mountain south of Roseburg had traffic being detoured through Winston.

Just after noon, reports started coming in about a wreck in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 on Robert's Mountain.

Authorities on the scene tell KPIC News that witnesses say a sudden hail storm covered the freeway, cutting the visibility down to nothing.

Many people told police that although vehicles were trying to stop, they just slid on the ice-covered roadway.

Only one minor injury was reported.

It appears that a Douglas County Sheriff's patrol car was caught up in the accident, and officials at the scene say at least six vehicles were involved.
