Physical fight between driver and girlfriend leads to fatal I-84 crash
CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. - A driver died in a van crash on Interstate 84 Saturday night after he began physically fighting with his girlfriend sitting in the passenger seat, state police said.
Lt. Gregg Hastings said the crash occurred on westbound I-84 about four miles west of Cascade Locks at 9 p.m.
Austin Monroe Herd, 31, began fighting with his girlfriend, 30-year-old Nicole Quintana, when the van veered to the left side of the freeway and hit a guardrail, Hastings said. Herd, who was not wearing a seat belt, fell out of the moving van through an open door.
Herd died at the scene.
Quintana and another passenger, 18-year-old Jessy Walters, were not seriously injured in the crash.
Herd, Quintana and Walters were headed to Portland from Texas to move in with Herd's relative, Hastings said.
