Over 100 local students going to college for free

WINCHESTER, Ore. -- Earlier this school year, Umpqua Community College announced a new program, giving students the opportunity for free tuition.

The response was greater than expected.

More than 100 local high school students have been accepted to UCC's first ever Scholars Program. "with Umpqua Scholars, students in Douglas County and the UCC district who meet a set criteria qualify for free tuition for two years at Umpqua Community College," said Krista Johnson of UCC.

The program targeted traditional high school students as well as home school and students joining the military. "Students did have to have at least a 3.5 GPA, and then we looked at if they were in the district, and they also had to meet requirements in our writing or math placement test, or have taken those college level classes."

Johnson says one of the main goals of the program was to get students to attend UCC and transfer on without any debt.
