HALSEY, Ore. -- One man died and five more people were injured in a car crash Saturday afternoon when a car ran a stop sign while trying to cross Highway 99E.
Officials said the crash happened at around 1:40 p.m. Saturday when Jon Nelson, 56 of Salem, didn't stop his Toyota Camry at the intersection of Lake Creek Lane while crossing Highway 99E.
After crossing the northbound lane, the Camry was hit in the passenger side by a 4-door Dodge sedan that was headed south, police said. Both cars ended up in the ditch after the crash.
Emergency crews said the passenger sitting in the front of the Camry, 70-year-old Leopoldo Clemente, was pronounced dead at the scene. Nelson and the two passengers sitting in the back seat, identified as Salem residents Prima Nelson, 46, and Maxima Clemente, 69, were all taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the Dodge, John Saw, 74 and his passenger Donna Saw, 73, both of Albany, were taken to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.
Crash investigators said all six people were wearing seat belts when the cars crashed.
The Oregon Department of Transportation reported delays of around 20 minutes in the area as crews worked the scene.
