Oakland student to advise on state board
OAKLAND, Ore. -- An Oakland High School junior is stepping up to represent students statewide.
Benjamin "B.J." Barnes has been chosen to serve as a student adviser on the State Board of Education.
B.J. says he's proud to be the voice of Oregon students. "I'm hoping to represent myself, my school and students across Oregon very well, and hoping, as well as I can, to keep their voices heard," he said.
This isn't the first time Barnes has served as an adviser. He also participated in former superintendent Susan Castillo's Youth Advisory Team.
B.J. is in the top 2% of his class, and along with being a 3-sport athlete and the student body vice president, he's pretty busy.
He says he enjoys being involved, and he's excited for the opportunity.
