New program could bring more doctors to Roseburg
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- More doctors may be coming to Roseburg.
Mercy Medical Center is creating a new family medicine residency program.
The program will work with Western University of Health Sciences Medical School.
Dr. Chip Taylor says the program will help bring more doctors to Roseburg.
He says many doctors end up staying where they completed their residency training.
“Our goal of this program is nothing less than to train exceptional family physicians for the 21st century who are ideally suited for rural practice,” Taylor said.
The program will be in a new building on the Mercy campus.
Dr. Taylor expects to produce eight new family practice physicians a year when the program is fully up and running.
They will start taking applications from prospective residents as early as next year and the first class will be admitted in July of 2019.
