Marshals: Raid nets Ore. man in bizarre case of kidnapping, beating

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - U.S. Marshals raided a Forest Grove home Tuesday and arrested a man they said was behind a bizarre crime that included kidnapping.

Detectives said the victim in the case was kidnapped, beaten, stripped, and tossed onto a stranger's doorstep.

Investigators said it all started over a woman, Angela Santos, who was arrested last month. Eugene Gilbert was arrested Tuesday at the raided Forest Grove home after an investigation that spanned several months and turned up disturbing details. Both are now in custody at the Washington County Jail.

In addition to Gilbert, investigators arrested Angela Fischer on charges of violating parole and hindering prosecution.

Gilbert has been arrested 52 times in Oregon for everything from assault to aggravated theft. This time he's accused of kidnapping, robbery and assault along with Santos who was arrested in September.

Investigators said Santos' boyfriend was the victim in this case and ended up in a Hillsboro front yard in July after he escaped being pummeled, pistol-whipped, robbed, driven around and beaten some more.

Sandy Van Olden said her next door neighbor found the victim badly injured.

"Said a guy came up, stumbled up and went to the side of his house and sat down. He went over to see what was going on and said the guy was beat up and bloody," said Van Olden.

She said her neighbor called police and investigators confirmed those details. Now with Santos and Gilbert behind bars, homeowners in two different neighborhoods said they feel some relief.

"It is good to know they've been caught," said Van Olden. "You do worry about things like that, you know. But we always keep our doors locked and the neighbors here watch out for each other so that's a good thing."

Investigators said Santos told them several different versions of what happened, including that there simply was no crime committed. KATU News went to the listed address for the victim but no one answered.
