Local Mathletes place well in regional tourney

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The Fremont Middle School MathCounts Club just returned from their regional tournament in Medford with three top ten finishes and second place overall.

Ten students from grades 6-8 participated in the regional competition.

Rachel Way, a 7th grade student, was one of those that participated. "Well, I understand math better than most people, so it's fun," she said. "I go and learn new stuff."

Members of the Fremont club say they enjoy the competition. "What I like in sports, you compete," said 8th grade student and president of the club, Bryce Knott. "Well, in math and if you're smart and you're not very athletic, you get to compete as well with your other strengths besides just physical strengths."

Placing in the top four earned prizes for the students.

Seventh grader Dominic Randall was a winner. "I ended up getting 17, I think it was, and I got fourth place, giving me the prize of an Ipod Nano."

Dominic also won $20 in the game round.

The team barely missed qualifying for the state competition next month, but MathCounts director Tracy Grauer says that with such a young team, she's expecting big things for next year.
