Kids gather for Celebration of Literacy

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Parents brought their children to the Roseburg Valley Mall on Saturday.

During this all day event, kids rotated to different booths.

The co-chair of the program says the event is a great way for kids to get excited about reading. Maxine Durst says it helps kids find something to do. "There's not a lot for kids in this community," she said. "They can be active in sports, but otherwise there isn't a great deal so this is something strictly for kids."

Durst says she gets calls from people every year, eager to know when the event will be held.

Kids were at the mall all day moving from station to station.

Some of the kids say their favorite activity was doing crafts.

While the day was centered around reading, kids constantly gathered around the arts and crafts station.
