Jackson County says No to casino, Cow Creek agrees
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- The Jackson County Board of Commissioners have voted against a Medford casino, and a Douglas County tribe is happy about the decision.
The Coquille tribe hopes to build a casino along South Pacific Highway.
The final decision isn't up to the commissioners, but the tribe was asking for their support, which they unanimously decided to deny.
The Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians is against the Medford area casino.
Officials with Cow Creek say they support the commissioner's decision, and hope the Coquille Tribe will do the same. Wayne Shammel, the Cow creek Tribe's general council, said, "Just because there's an opportunity there doesn't necessarily make it OK, there's a balance, and that's sort of where we've come from on this."
The final decision goes to the US Bureau of Indian Affairs.
