'It is just the enjoyment of playing these tournaments'
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Roseburg is home to the state's largest horseshoe club, a group that travels across Oregon to compete in horseshow tournaments.
Club president Wes Honn said the group competes almost every weekend from April until October.
"They have a money tournament in Grants Pass. In that one I took first place and won 70 dollars," said Honn. "So it's not about the money so much as it is just the enjoyment of playing these tournaments and meeting lots of nice people."
The game isn't as popular as it once was, but Honn said people get hooked after they play their first game.
"I find a lot of young people really like it when they get out here and do it. My grandson really likes it, and he's doing really well," Honn said.
The club practices Thursdays, and Honn says they are always looking for men and women of all ages to join.
"Even though we're the largest club in the state, we're not that large. We would like to get back to probably 30 or 40 horseshoe players in Roseburg," he said.
The club will be back in action the last weekend in July at Stewart Park.
