House burns with people inside, but not really

WINCHESTER, Ore. -- For those who saw smoke in the Del Rio Road area on Tuesday, the fire was all part of a training exercise for Douglas County Fire District #2 firefighters.

The controlled burn started around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, but flames didn't engulf the abandoned house until later in the afternoon.

The purpose of the exercise is to help prepare firefighters for real life situations.

Barry Hutchings, Battalion Chief, said that they don't just practice putting out flames.

"We want people to understand what's gonna happen in a house fire before they get one tonight with possible victims inside," Hutchings said.

The valuable drill helps them practice in a real, but controlled, setting.

This is the only controlled house burn the district will see this year.
