CANNON BEACH, Ore. - A 37-year-old woman from Seaside, wearing only a shirt, ran up to a Cannon Beach police officer while he was conducting a traffic stop on Highway 101 just north of the Highway 26 junction late Tuesday night and told him a man was trying to rape her, according to the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office.
Police began a search of the area and found 61-year-old William Fredrick Cox Jr. of Warrenton hiding in tall grass north of Dennis' Seven Dees landscape center. The sheriff's office said Cox refused to follow orders and tried to flee the area.
But deputies and officers caught him and took him into custody just after 2 a.m., a little more than 2 1/2 hours after the woman ran up to the officer.
Cox was injured during his attempt to flee, the sheriff's office said. He was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital and then to the Clatsop County Jail.
Cox faces charges of first-degree sodomy, first-degree attempted rape, first-degree unlawful penetration and coercion and harassment. He is expected to be arraigned in Clatsop County Circuit Court Thursday.
The sheriff's office said Dennis' Seven Dees in not part of its investigation but Cox is employed at a nearby business.
